How to Apply for Housing

To apply for housing, you must complete the application and pay the deposit online through the housing portal, My Housing.  You should have received information from Enrollment Services on how to claim your account in the WVU Portal. If you have questions about the Portal, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 1-877-327-9260. In addition to the application and deposit, you will select your room and your meal plan.

To complete your housing application and pay your housing deposit online:

1. Sign into the housing portal, MyHousing with your Username and Password.
2. Select “Housing Application (Potomac State)”
3. Select the term for which you are applying (ex. PSC - Academic Year 2024-25; PSC - Spring Only 2025)
4. Follow the process of completing the housing application and submitting the $225 housing deposit. During this process you may view roommate profiles and select your room. If you and a friend would like to room together, both of you will need to have started the housing application and paid the $225 housing deposit. It is up to you and your roommate to place yourselves in a room. MyHousing is not designed to automatically place students together into a room. Under no circumstances does the College guarantee who will be your roommate. 
5. Please log in to the WVU Portal regularly for the most up-to-date information concerning housing and other communications from Potomac State College. There is not a deadline to apply for housing. But those who apply and pay their deposit early have a better chance of selecting the hall of their choice.

Please Note:

• Meal plan selection will be available after you have completed the housing application.  You will purchase your meal plan by logging into My Mountaineer Card.  Fall semester meal plans are available for purchase in early March.
• Make sure that you continue to check your WVU Portal account regularly for further information regarding on campus housing.

Housing Assignment and Roommate Requests

During the process of completing the housing application/contract and paying the $225 room reservation fee, you will be able to select your room assignment and a roommate. This process will be completed by logging into MyHousing. If you don't have a roommate preference, you will be given the opportunity to fill out a roommate matching questionnaire (Public Roommate Profile) that will suggest a roommate with similar preferences.  We ask that you, and NOT your parents, fill out this section honestly.

If you and a friend would like to room together, you will have the opportunity to send a request to them via StarRez. You and your roommate must place yourselves in a room. My Housing will not automatically place you together. All roommate requests should be made early to ensure enough space to accommodate your request. Under no circumstances does the College guarantee who will be your roommate.

If you find that you are matched with someone who does not share your joy of mornings or you do not like your location, do not despair. Room changes can be made through MyHousing up through the middle of June.  Room changes may also be requested through your RHC (Residence Hall Coordinator) approximately three weeks after the semester begins. Room changes are subject to space availability and will not be made or changed on the basis of race, national origin, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation.

Students can view their room assignment and roommate information by logging into MyHousing and viewing the Application Status page.  Students should also check their WVU Portal regularly for the most up-to-date information concerning housing.

The housing contract is a legally binding contract committing you to live in campus housing for the entire academic year (mid-August to mid-May).

When Assignments are Made

Assignments for the Fall term (August-December) will be selected during the housing application process.  Self-selection of room is available through MyHousing until mid to late June.  After self-selection has ended, assignments will be made by the Housing and Residence Life Staff.

For the incoming students for the Spring term (January-May), assignments will be made by the Housing and Residence Life Staff.

Apply Early/ Deadlines

We accept applications until classes starts for each term. However, it is best to apply early. The earlier you apply, the better your chances of getting your preferences. Remember that late applicants may have to wait for a room assignment and may be assigned to temporary housing if space is not available when you apply.

After the halls fill, we utilize extended and temporary housing sites to meet the demand. 

June 1- Refund Deadline for Fall . 

$125 of the $225 deposit is refundable if you notify us in writing of your intent to cancel your contract or e-mail us at PSCHousing@mail.wvu.edu . Once you submit your cancellation, you will cancel your admission, registration, financial aid, scholarships, orientation, and housing. This notice must be postmarked, or time stamped by June 1 regardless of when the deposit is paid. After this date, the deposit is nonrefundable, and the contract is legally binding for the entire academic year as long as you attend PSC. If you do not cancel by June 1, you will be billed for the entire academic year and will not be released from the contract as long as you are attending PSC.  

December 1- Refund Deadline for Spring .

Who is Required to Live On-Campus?

Students that are single and enrolled in classes full-time are required to live on campus. A few exceptions exist:

1. Students who are 21 years of age or older by the first day of classes of the applicable term
2. Students who are married 
3. Students with children (custodial parent)
4. Student residing with custodial parent(s)/guardians in Mineral County or one of its contiguous counties: Hardy, Grant, Hampshire in WV; Allegany and Garrett in MD.

Commuting Students

In order to be considered a commuter, you must live in Mineral County or one of its contiguous counties: Hardy, Grant, Hampshire, WV; Allegany and Garrett in MD. Living with a sibling or other relatives does not qualify you as a commuter.

Changes to Your Contract 

If you must make changes to your contract, please log into MyHousing to make any necessary changes. You may email pschousing@mail.wvu.edu to request a change that cannot be made in the housing portal.

How to Cancel Your Contract 

In order to cancel your contract, you may send written notification to the Housing Office or e-mail us at pschousing@mail.wvu.edu . Once you submit your cancellation; you will cancel your admission, registration, financial aid, scholarships, orientation, and housing. In order to receive a $125 refund, all requests must be received by June 1st for the fall term and December 1st for the spring term regardless of when you pay the deposit. After these dates, deposits are nonrefundable. The contract is binding for the entire academic year and cannot be cancelled as long as you attend WVU. If you do not cancel by June 1 (December 1 for the spring term), you will be billed for the entire academic year and will not be released from this contract as long as you are attending PSC.

After these dates, please still send written notification of your intent to cancel your contract if you are not going to attend PSC so that we can clear your account of housing and meal charges. Remember that your contract is legally binding for the entire academic year.

Wait Listing for Residence Halls

Once you have been assigned to a room and a residence hall, you may request to be placed on a waitlist for another hall that is currently filled. You must submit your request in writing. You will remain on the wait list until you are placed in that hall or send written notification that you want to be removed from the list. If you and your roommate want to move together, you both must submit your requests in writing. If you are placed in the hall you have been waiting for, your previous location will no longer be available.

Note: Wait-list requests are not considered until after self-selecting through My Housing has closed. 

While we try to accommodate all wait-list requests, we cannot guarantee you will receive your request.

Break Housing

PSC halls are closed during extended breaks (Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Breaks); Each student will be asked to vacate the hall they live in at a set time for each break.  Notices of these times and dates will be provided well in advance.  Typically, the halls close at 4 p.m. on the Friday before the break starts but are specific to each academic year.  For information on this process, please see someone in the housing office.  Students are not required to take all of their belonging home but are encouraged to take anything they feel uncomfortable leaving or items that may be needed during the break.  The halls are only closed during the three extended breaks listed above, for one day holidays, the halls operate as usual. 

Tobacco-Free Environment

In order to provide a healthy environment for all of our students, all residence halls are tobacco-free.

Special Needs Housing

The Office of Housing and Residence Life makes every effort to accommodate special needs. However, you must apply early as late requests for specific needs are difficult to accommodate.
